Note: We spoke to Nilekani on the 3rd March, after he had begun campaigning, but before he had formally left the UID and before polling dates had been announced.
I would say that if I had gone straight from the corporate sector into politics, that would have been a far more difficult transition. But the combination of the fact that I’d worked in urban governance issues in the BATF, and with Aadhaar I had worked in the central government in a very senior role, dealing with the political challenges in these two experiences has equipped me now t take up this role of standing for MP. I’m not just a corporate guy—it’s true that I spent 29 years co-creating a world-class company, CEO, all that—but I’ve also done urban governance at a nitty-gritty level, seeing whether the roads have been done, meeting commissioners, getting into garbage issues, hardcore urban issues. And with Aadhaar I’ve done the world’s largest and most complex identity project. It’s the diversity of these three big experiences that gives me the confidence that i can perform successfully as a politician.
Q. Could you expand on how you are using technology?
Q. The inevitable conflicts that will come up for everyone in politics—confronting corruption, the process of compromise, uncomfortable alliances for a ‘greater good’—how do you see yourself navigating that?

Excellent interview with Nandan Nilekani. Under normal circumstances Nandan Nilekani should win easily. But with anti congress wave,it is difficult. Even as an Independent,he has better chances. His Stint at Centre as Chairman, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is more a criticism than success. The Aadhaar Card has been a mess. People have to wait for months. When Indian Census conducted efficiently and Mobile penetrated in rural areas, why should such an ambitious Aadharr Card was not successful in covering all? Dr.A.Jagadeesh Nellore(AP),India
on Apr 24, 2014Pl do not compare Aadhaar with census and mobile phones. Census is in force for the past 60 years and where as mobiles penetrated India 20 years ago. When an organisation has to issue identity cards to one billion people there will be hitches. For that Nandan is not responsible. Aadhaar is here to stay and will stay.
on May 5, 2014Some of my friends are waiting for long to get Aadhaar? In this space age when other countries like US,Japan etc. are racing at Jet speed,we are inching at Bullock Cart Speed!
on May 6, 2014WHY 5 TIME M P WILL SIT AT HOME THIS TIME In the last assembly elections, in the Bangalore South LS constituency, Congress got 77,000 votes more than BJP. Nandan\'s clean image will give him an additional 50,000 votes, this includes techies, first time voters. Current government performance may fetch extra 15,000 votes. Strategic voting by a particular community will yield another 40,000 extra votes. Anti-Incumbency (against the current MP) will give Nandan another 18,000 votes. AAP and Sriramasena will take away another 50,000 votes, which otherwise would have gone to BJP. That means Nandan now has a lead of 2,50,000 votes over nearest rival Ananth. Now look at Ananth\'s tally. Modi wave may give him additional 70,000 votes. The increase in voting percentage will add another 50,000 votes. Extra efforts by 2 BJP MLAs will give him additional 30,000 votes. An BJP MLC\'s effort will fetch him some additional votes around 20,000. That means Nandan is sure to win with a minimum margin of 55,000 plus votes.
on Apr 22, 2014It is \"ex-Infoscion\" and not \"ex-Infoscian\" ! And Nandan is a able person, but he chose a wrong party(Congress)! A party full of corrupts and looters.
on Apr 18, 2014Nandan will win with ease. He should win with a minimum of 55,000 votes. We need clean hands in politics. Read more in firstchoiceipo why the 5 times MP will sit at home this time.
on Apr 18, 2014Although I'm an AAP man, I sincerely hope Nandan Nilekani wins. He brings with him, a whiff of fresh air, something very desperately needed today. He is clean, sincere, honest and has proved himself beyond all doubt in the past. Unlike almost every other candidate, he is obviously in it for all the right reasons. Good luck Mr. Nilekani! Hope to see you in Parliament
